How do you balance creativity and functionality in your designs?

One thing a lot of designers have failed to realize is that there is a huge difference between creativity and functionality in graphic design. Your work might be creative but it might not produce the needed results. How do you create a balance between creativity and functionality?

Agreed. For examples, a design targeted towards kids should include bright colors and cartoon images. However, for adults, light colors can go better. Interestingly, the design targeted towards men can include images of women. using women in designs works well with adult demography.
