I think events like writing/posting contest, referral contest, etc, can significantly improve engagement on a forum. I know a forum that ran posting contest for many months and was able to get hundreds of users and thousands of posts

You can encourage user-generated events by empowering members to host contests, Q&A sessions, or themed discussions. For example, allowing users to organize a “Photo of the Month” challenge or a live AMA with experts boosts engagement and makes them feel invested in the community.
