Manually Approving Accounts

I am running a forum where I manually approve account. In the past accounts were auto approved, which led to spamming and it was a tedious work to prune these spam accounts. Therefore, these days I manually approve account. While it is not possible to determine whether the newly registered user is spammer or not but you can get a rough idea by looking at the domain they use for email.

Running a forum with manual account approval is a smart approach to prevent spamming. While it’s hard to tell if a new user is a spammer immediately, checking the email domain is a useful tactic for spotting suspicious accounts early. It’s all about reducing future work.

I am not okay with manually approval of new accounts. It's very annoying to me. VGR was the last forum which did that to me. I really hated it.

I think manual approval can put members off from participating in your community if you don't have an active admin who's there to approve accounts as soon as possible. Last year I tried joining a forum that had admin approval enabled and noticed that the last time anyone signed up on the forum was a long time ago, and that shown that the admins had abandoned the forum unfortunately.

Manual approval of account can certainly put off users. I have been in this shoe as a user. However, as a forum owner when you do not have moderators to moderate users and posts, manual approval might help you, especially when your forum is small.

Manual approving accounts is something that I only do for users that are caught in the known spam filters.

However, if your forum doesn’t have good spam protection in place, then it’s a good idea to manual approval accounts.
