Domain extensions: Do they really matter?

I am not sure how many domain exists but I guess, there are hundreds of domain extensions available. My question is do domain extensions really matter? I mean is a website using dot com better than a website using xyz domain extension? Can I use any extensions I want, do do I need to choose the most popular ones?

Last time I checked there were over 1500 domain extensions. Technically speaking, domain extensions do not affect SEO score of the website. However, some domain extensions are valued more than the others. For instance, domains like got, edu, and org have better value than com or net.

Yes, they matter. If they dud not matter people wouldn't be spending insane amount of money to get a dot com. Dot com helps you to build a brand. Most popular sites use dot com. Just answer me a simple question if dot come did not matter why did Facebook Google Amazin etc dis not use net domain that was also released with dot com?

For commercial success, dot com does matter and most people trust websites using a dot com, and dot com domains are easily brandable, however, for search engine perspective, what actually matters is your domain name, whether it has keywords or not or whether you have done SEO or not.

Wow so many domain extensions. I am sure I might have never heard of 99 percent of them. So, you mean domain extensions do actually have SEO value if it is something like gov or edu.

search engines tend to push these domains higher in the ranking compared to other types of extension. However, with better content you can easily out rank these domains.

Domain extensions can matter, but it depends on your goals, right. Traditional ones like .com are widely recognized and trusted, boosting credibility. However, niche extensions (like .tech or .shop) can help convey your focus. It's about aligning with your brand identity. What do you say?

I think it matters to a point, but I personally like to go with different tld like zone if it matches the name of my website. I have a few different tld that aren't .com, .net, or .org. More people are familiar with .com since it's the oldest tld extension.

For branding, using the popular options matter. For instance, it is easier to build a brand over a dot com rather than xyz or other less popular option. However, it is also possible to build a brand with less popular option as in the long run no body cares what extension the website is using, they only care about the content.
