I am not sure how many domain exists but I guess, there are hundreds of domain extensions available. My question is do domain extensions really matter? I mean is a website using dot com better than a website using xyz domain extension? Can I use any extensions I want, do do I need to choose the most popular ones?

Last time I checked there were over 1500 domain extensions. Technically speaking, domain extensions do not affect SEO score of the website. However, some domain extensions are valued more than the others. For instance, domains like got, edu, and org have better value than com or net.
